In an effort to bring a halt to the fraud which was first reported to gardai last week, detectives have urged members of the public to be wary of any online or postal offers inviting people to lodge cash at various banking institutions in return for state of the art mobile phones.<br/><br/>One individual, who has since referred the matter to gardai, said they were asked to deposit a sum of money through buy and sell internet site 'www.donedeal.ie'. <br/><br/>After lodging the cash at Longford town's Permanent TSB branch, the individual concerned contacted gardai last Monday (January 17) after they were led to believe they were purchasing a new iphone. Just days later, the victim of the scam was left enraged when they received a set of firelighters in the post, prompting gardai to launch an investigation.<br/><br/>A similar incident is also understood to have taken place at the Educational Building Society on Longford town's Main Street on the same date.<br/><br/>Much like the previous occasion, the unsuspecting customer was asked to lodge money into specified bank account. This time however, a faulty phone was dispatched to the client's home address, leaving the person hundreds of euro out of pocket.<br/><br/>Gardai have this week asked the public to refrain from handing accepting 'cash for phone' offers that involve depositing sums of cash into previously unknown bank accounts.<br/><br/>Anyone who may have any information in relation to this latest scam is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3346741.
