Apartment fire displaces dozens

PASADENA - A fire in a four-story apartment building Fridaydisplaced 32 residents, officials said.

The blaze was reported about 6:30 p.m. at the Towers Apartments,at the corner of Del Mar Boulevard and El Molino Avenue, saidPasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.

Firefighters got control of the fire in about 20 minutes,Derderian said.

Firefighters responded to reports of sparks in the walls to findthe fourth floor of the building filled with smoke and the attic inflames, Derderian said.

The entire building was closed down to the fire and the Red Crosswas on hand to aid residents with nowhere to stay, she said.

The top two floors of the building, where the majority of thedamage was isolated, will be unlivable for an unknown amount oftime, Derderian said.

The brick building, which Derderian estimated to have eightapartment on each floor, was built prior to 1933.

Student admits school threats

POMONA - A 15-year-old boy Friday admitted making criminalthreats against fellow students at Glen A. Wilson High School inHacienda Heights last month.

The teen admitted six counts of making criminal threats, and aseventh charge was dismissed, according to Jane Robison of theDistrict Attorney's Office.

The boy was expected to be released Friday from Juvenile Hall andplaced on probation, Robison said.

Juvenile Court Judge Martha Bellinger ordered the teen not tohave any contact with the high school or the named victims and notto have weapons, according to Robison.

He also was ordered to attend individual and family counselingand have restricted supervised Internet access for educationalpurposes only, Robison said.

The Hacienda Heights boy posted two messages on a Web sitethreatening to shoot six specific people and members of a schoolsports team, according to prosecutors.

The school was closed April 21 as authorities investigated thethreats.

Police to hold open house

ARCADIA - The Arcadia Police Department is holding its Open Houseand Safety Fair today.

The even will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the policestation, 250 W. Huntington Drive, police said.

Biker hurt in collision

COVINA - A man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuriesFriday after his motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle,authorities said.

The crash was reported at 7:42 p.m. at the intersection ofBadillo Street and Sunset Avenue, according to the CaliforniaHighway Patrol.

The motorcyclist was northbound on Sunset Avenue when the crashoccurred, according to CHP Sgt. Carl Gafford. A Ford Expedition,driven by a woman, was eastbound on Badillo Street, he said.

Witnesses said one of the vehicles ran a red light prior to thecollision, however, officials had not determined late Friday whichvehicle ran the light.

The biker apparently laid his bike down just before the crash andslid into the SUV, Gafford said. He was thrown 25 to 30 feet fromhis motorcycle, Gafford added.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation,officials said.

The motorcyclist's wife and 3-year-old child were following himin another vehicle and witnessed the crash, Gafford said.

Witnesses said fire officials performed cpr until the biker wasdriven away in an ambulance.
