Malaysia Anwar Howard (Canberra)

Malaysia has responded with outrage to Australia's criticism of the verdict in the
ANWAR IBRAHIM case.

Legal affairs minister RAIS YATIM has effectively told Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD to
mind his own business.

Mr YATIM says it's easy for Mr HOWARD to criticise -- but he should come and see for
himself how the system works.

Mr YATIM has told ABC radio the Prime Minister should be taking care of domestic problems,
rather than concerning himself with the judicial affairs of another country.

Mr HOWARD yesterday questioned the independence of Malaysia's judiciary, saying it
seemed to be part of a political campaign against the former deputy prime minister.

ANWAR IBRAHIM was found guilty of sodomy yesterday, and sentenced to nine years in
prison -- the climax of his two-year battle against what he's called a political conspiracy
against him.

The decision has attracted strong criticism from outside Malaysia.

Mr YATIM says he's aware of the international media view but, in his view, the judicial
process has been faultless.
