SA: Strong support for car workers says union movement

The South Australian union movement says there is widespread support among union members
for the action being taken by car industry workers to protect their entitlements.

United Trades and Labor Council state secretary CHRIS WHITE says he also believes there
is widespread public support for the workers' cause.

He says the strikes are necessary to support the Manusafe scheme, a special safety
net entitlements fund in the manufacturing sector.

He says in the past three years there have been a spate of company collapses in various
industries in which workers lost their long service leave, sick leave, redundancy pay
and in some cases superannuation entitlements.

Mr WHITE says in the wake of collapses such as OneTel and HIH, workers can no longer
trust governments or their employer.
