PINIELLA'S PROMOTION GOOD NEWS TO STUMP.(Sports)

Stump Merrill expected to have his buddy, Lou Piniella, around for a few more days. Instead, Piniella made an abrupt exit Thursday.

Merrill was happy to see him go.

"Happy? I'm tickled to death," said Merrill, manager of the Albany-Colonie Yankees. "The guy's a good man; he deserves an opportunity. I'm happy to see him back in New York. The man belongs on the field. It's as simple as that. I'm elated for me, for him, for the organization. I wouldn't want to see him go to another organization unless he took me with him."

Piniella, in town to evaluate minor league talent, planned to play golf at Albany …
